Was Peter Pope?
You have already read everything the Bible says about Peter being the pope - Nothing!
The words "pope" and "papacy" are not found in the Bible. In 606 A.D., Boniface III took the title of “universal bishop” or “papa” of the Roman Catholic Church. Although this act was not by the authority of God, it set a precedent for all subsequent popes.
This office of pope, as well as the Roman Catholic Church, was unknown at the time of Christ, the apostles and the 1st century church. Therefore the Roman Catholic Church cannot be Christ's church, the church Jesus purchased with His own blood (Matt. 16:18), the one we read about in the Bible.
So what about Peter?
Peter was an apostle (Matt. 10:2), and a preacher (Acts 2:14) but he never claimed or received authority over the apostles or the universal church itself. Peter, according to today's Roman Catholic Church qualifications, could never have been pope.
First, he was married (Matt. 8:14). Second, he was rebuked by Paul "because he was to be blamed" (Gal. 2:11). This shows he was not infallible, a quality claimed for those who are pope. Third, when people fell down to worship Peter, he said, "Stand up; I myself am also a man" (Acts 10:26). Last, Peter denied the church was built by or upon himself (1 Pet. 2:4-6). Jesus is the only head of the church (Col. 1:18).
Since the office of pope and the appointment of popes are not recorded in the New Testament, and God's word is complete (Jude 3; 1 Cor. 13:10), who started the idea - God or man? Whose authority are you under? (Matt. 21:23-24)
Baptism for the Dead?
It is sad to see the lives of men and women leaving this earth only to be unprepared to stand before Almighty God (Rom. 14:9; 2 Tim. 4:1; 2 Pet. 3:7). It is sadder still to see members of our own earthy families going into eternity inadequately equipped for what is to come. It makes us want to do something for them, but we cannot. After they are gone we cannot call them back, nor can we obey the gospel for them (Prov. 11:7; Lk. 16:26; Heb. 9:27).
There is no such biblical teaching as “baptism for the dead,” as Mormons teach and practice. They wrest 1 Cor. 15:29 to their own destruction.
In the context of 1 Corinthians 15, Paul preached the same hope of Israel and the resurrection as Moses and the prophets (Acts 17:10-11; 26:21-22), yet some at Corinth were denying the resurrection to the very ones it was promised to (the faithful Old Testament saints who had died). Those still living, including Gentiles who were now hearing the gospel, were being baptized for (lit. upon), or in view of, these dead ones.
Whatever they believed, their actions were inconsistent with their belief of thinking that the dead ones would not be raised. If the dead (ones) do not rise, why be baptized at all? If there was no resurrection of the dead Old Testament faithful, then those living as Christians at that time suffered needlessly for the cause of Christ (1 Cor. 15:30-32).
Regarding the practice of Mormon baptism for the dead, even the Book of Mormon (which is not inspired of God) refutes this error (see Alma 34:32-35). Like other passages from God's word, 1 Corinthians 15, has been twisted by men in order to justify a baptism for people who left this life unprepared. If you do not make preparations in this life for the next, you will be unprepared - period. If you ain’t going to heaven a Christian - You ain’t going! (Jn. 14:6).
Can I Know Truth?
Jesus testified before Pilate saying, "Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice" (Jn. 18:37). Your response, as was Pilate's, may be “What is truth?” (vs.38). His words of contempt convey the mindset common today that confidently claims, "We cannot know the truth of God’s word, nor truth itself." How does one know truth cannot be known?
Contrary to the unbelief of many, God has spoken regarding our ability to know the truth. Jesus declared, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn. 8:32). John 17:17, Jesus prayed to the Father, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” The Bible is man’s source for truth. (2 Tim 3:16-17)
Further, Christians are to know the will of the Lord. Paul writes to the church at Ephesus, “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Eph. 5:17). God has not commanded us to do something that is impossible.
Therefore, we can understand the Lord’s will. We can know truth and know what God meant when He said it and that He meant only one thing when He said it!
We can know we are saved from eternal death and right with God when we obey His will. “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments” (1 Jn. 2:3). We can know the truth. We have God’s Word on it!
The Model Church
The model church is composed of a people who abide in the doctrine of Christ and do not seek to have fellowship with false teachers (2 Jn. 9-11; Rom. 16:17). Rather, they "seek first the Lord's kingdom and His righteousness" (Matt. 6:33). Its members are "set for the defense of the gospel" (Phil. 1:16). They "live soberly, righteously and godly, in the present age." (Titus 2:12)
The model church is a people who do not "forsake the assembling of themselves together, but exhort one another" (Heb. 10:25). They do not engage in vain (empty) worship (Matt. 15:7-9), but they worship God in "spirit and in truth" (Jn. 4:24). That is, they have right attitudes and actions towards God and one another and they practice such by the right authority. (Jn. 17:17)
The model church continues "steadfastly in the apostles doctrine... and in prayers" (Acts. 2:42). They sing, but do not engage in the playing of mechanical instruments of music in their worship to God (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). Upon every first day of the week they observe the Lord's Supper and give as they have prospered. (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2)
The model church does not teach alien sinners (those outside of Christ) to pray for pardon (Matt. 7:21; Luke 6:46; Acts 2:37), nor do they teach justification or saved by faith only (James 2:24). Those of the model church teach alien sinners that to be saved, they must hear the gospel of Christ (Rom. 10:17), believe (Mk. 16:16), repent (Acts 2:38), confess their belief in the Christ (Rom. 10:9-10), be immersed in water (Acts 2:38; 1 Pet. 3:21), and live faithful to God until death (Rev. 2:10). Whose doctrine (teaching) do you abide in? (2 Tim. 4:3-4)
Baptism - Essential to Salvation?
The question is asked, "Must I be baptized to be saved?" What do the Scriptures teach? Immediately before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gave this charge to His apostles. “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will condemned” (Mk. 16:16)
According to the above Scripture, who shall be saved? The one that believes and is baptized. Who shall be condemned? "He who does not believe." In order to obtain salvation and become a child of God, one must be baptized into Christ. Understand too, that one who does not believe is not a candidate for baptism.
Matthew records the same occurrence and adds these words; “teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you....” (Matt. 28:20). What is it that Jesus commanded His apostles to teach concerning salvation? Peter and the other eleven apostles taught those who heard their preaching and believed in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, to “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized for the forgiveness of sins...” (Acts 2:38)
Some will argue that one is baptized because they are already saved because they believe the word “for” really means “because.” But if that were true, then in Matthew 26:28, Jesus shed His blood on the cross in vain because mankind was already saved according to the belief that “for” means “because.” This teaching contradicts what Jesus Himself taught and what He accomplished at the cross.
If baptism is not essential to salvation, why did our Lord command it right before He left the earth? Why were 3000 baptized in one day if it is not necessary (Acts 2:41)? Why didn’t they have a special future “baptizing day” as some practice? The answer is because until they were baptized, they were still in their sins. Until they were baptized, they had not obeyed what Jesus and the apostles commanded.
According to the New Covenant, baptism is for the forgiveness of sins and is essential to one's salvation. Is this what you are taught and how one is saved where you worship?
Christ's Church is Not Baptist
This article concerns doctrine, not personalities. No intention is made to question one’s sincerity of belief.
According to the Baptist’s book, Baptist Church Manual, by J. M. Pendleton, D. D.:
1. The Baptist Church Manual states, “While faith possesses no merit, it brings the soul into vital contact with the blood of atonement, which possesses infinite merit. It unites to Christ.” p. 10
A. This statement contradicts New Testament teaching. The New Testament teaches faith is a necessary part of pleasing God (Heb. 11:6), however, faith alone is not what unites a believer to Christ. One comes into contact with the blood of Christ through baptism. (Rom. 6:4-6; Gal. 3:27, 1 Pet. 3:21; Rev. 1:5)
2. Baptist Church Manual states, “Every penitent believer is a regenerate person.” p. 11
A. This statement contradicts New Testament teaching. The New Testament teaches one must be penitent of his sins toward God. This he does in repentance (Lk. 13:3; 2 Pet. 3:9), but repentance of sins does grant newness of life. Your sins committed against God separate you from having fellowship with God, but ceasing from willful sin alone does not grant you the forgiveness of your past sins. God’s provision for a person to receive forgiveness is in the act of baptism.
The purpose of baptism according to the New Testament is for the forgiveness of sins (Mk. 1:4; Lk. 24:47; Acts 2:38). It is then that one is raised to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4). It is then that one becomes a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). It is then that one is in Christ (Rom. 3:24-25; 6:11; 12:5; Eph. 1:3; 2:13). It is then that one is reconciled to God (Col. 1:21-24).
Please consider your salvation in light of the Scriptures. May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith. (Jn. 4:24; Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17)
“THAT’S YOUR INTERPRETATION”
People often make the above statement when they disagree over the meaning of scripture. Those who rely on such an argument make God to be a god of confusion, which He is not (1 Cor. 14:33). The only correct interpretation is God’s. What does the Bible say concerning how we are to understand His Word? Take the test (1 Jn 4:1). Read and answer the following questions. Then look the answer up in the Bible.
1. Does God expect everyone to teach (speak) the same thing? Yes No (1 Cor. 1:10)
2. Are there to be divisions over God’s word? Yes No (1 Cor. 1:10)
3. Are there divisions in the world today because some do not speak (teach) the same thing? Yes No
4. How many bodies (churches) do we read about in the Bible? (Eph. 4:4-6; Col. 1:18; Matt.16:18)
5. How many Lords are there? (Eph. 4:4-6)
6. How many faiths (beliefs)? (Eph. 4:4-6; Gal. 1:6-10)
7. How many baptisms? (Eph. 4:4-6)
8. How many Gods? (Eph. 4:4-6)
9. According to these scriptures, may we teach people to be saved in different ways? Yes No 10. Are you worshiping with the “church of your choice” or with the church established by Christ and recorded in the New Testament?
THE TRUTH ABOUT CHRISTMAS
People often accept the doctrines of Catholicism on Christmas and Easter just as if the word of the Pope were as good as Jesus Christ’s. But, if we are to follow the Bible and the Bible only, then we must hear, believe and do what it says.
The truth of the matter is, Christ has never been in Christmas. Christmas is the tradition of men. The Holy Spirit tells us in 2 John 9ff, “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son”. Christmas is not a part of the doctrine of Christ. If we keep it as a religious observance, we transgress and do not abide in His teachings and by doing so, we would not have God nor Christ. Christ is not in anything He is not the author of. Therefore, He is not in Christmas and never has been.
Furthermore, the Lord Himself warned against following the commandments of men (Matt. 15:9). If you are concerned about being pleasing to God, this should make a difference. We are a people who are deeply concerned about you. We invite you to receive Jesus Christ, who is the gift from God to man, and do so according to the pattern set forth in the New Testament. May God bless every one of you that you may know the truth and obey it.
THE ERROR OF EASTER
This Sunday, Roman Catholics and most Protestants will celebrate Easter as a holy day. It is an annual remembrance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Lord’s death, burial and resurrection were according to the Scriptures 1 Cor. 15:3-4. So what is the problem of observing this special “holy day”?
The problem is, there are no Scriptural grounds in the New Testament for such a practiced. If not endorsed with Scriptural authority, by what authority is this done? Matt. 15:9. The apostles left no written instruction nor gave example of any annual holy day in remembrance of the Lord’s resurrection. They practiced a weekly observance. Upon every first day of the week, 1st century Christians came together to worship and remember the Lord’s death, burial and resurrection through the partaking of the Lord’s Supper. Acts 2:42; 20:7; 1 Cor. 10:16-18; 16:1-2; Rev. 1:10; cf. Matt. 26:26f. Since God in His Word has made no provision for a so-called “Easter Sunday,” it cannot be truth. To worship God in error and in sincerity is unacceptable before God Jn. 4:24.
Is it wrong to celebrate Easter? No, but . . .if we observe this day as if God has given us the religious authority to do so, then yes it would be a sin to go beyond that which God has given. We are not to add to His Word (Deut. 4:2; Gal. 3:15; 4:10-11; 1 Jn. 2:24; Rev. 22:19). The bunny, eggs, candy etc. have no religious meaning to those who attach no religious significance to such.
There is a difference between an unauthorized religious practice and a cultural custom. Please consider your salvation in light of the Scriptures. We invite you to grow in the truth with us.
THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST
The plea of the churches of Christ is an answer to the prayer that our Lord Jesus Christ prayed to His Father in John 17:21. He prayed that all His believers “may be one”. The Lord’s church, the church He established on the Day of Pentecost, desires religious unity among Christians. Unity not based on human creeds nor compromise, but unity founded on the New Testament.
In a divided religious world, we believe God’s Word is the only common ground upon which God fearing people of this land can and must unite. Our appeal is to simply go back to the Bible and speak where the Bible speaks and to remain silent where the Bible is silent on all matters of religion. The churches of Christ believe that in all religious matters there must be a “thus saith the Lord for we say, think and do”. How about you?
So come with us. Examine the scriptures and experience New Testament Christianity and the Lord’s New Testament church for yourself. We will not ask you to believe or do anything without giving the Bible authority for it. You have God’s Word on it.
THE ONLY ANSWER BOOK
Life is very long on problems, but short on true solutions outside the Word of God. There have been many “best selling” books that have been written to help aid and offer solutions in overcoming life’s difficulties of one kind or another. They all fall short of the answer.
Many see the Bible as irrelevant or too difficult to understand. To them it is only a “problem book”. Others have learned that the Bible contains time-tested and true solutions to life’s problems and concerns.
The greatest problem man faces is a sin problem. It is the curse of man, the grief of heaven and the delight of hell. Sin is not something inherited from parents (Ezek. 18:20). Sin is a transgression of God’s law (1 Jn. 3:4). Sin is a failure to do that which is commanded. It is described as filth and vomit (2 Peter2:20-22); darkness and blindness (2 Cor. 4:2-6); ignorance and misunderstanding (Matt. 22:29). The Word of God says we can be cleansed from the defilement of sin (Jn 15:3); our eyes opened and the darkness dispelled (Rev. 3:18); and ignorance and misunderstanding replaced by proper knowledge of God’s will for us (Matt. 11:28-30; 2 Tim. 2:15; Eph. 5:17).
The problem of this life is one of sin (Rom. 3:23). The answer of this life is the Christ’s blood (1 Jn 1:7). The blood of Christ is applied to the believer when he is baptized into Christ’s death (Rom. 6:1-4). Consider God’s solution first. The answer to a good conscience (1 Pet.3:21).
WHY INVESTIGATE THE CHURCH OF CHRIST?
1. IT WAS BUILT BY JESUS CHRIST. Jesus said, “And I also say to you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build My church....” (Matt. 16:18)
2. IT IS SCRIPTURAL IN NAME. Paul stated, “The churches of Christ greet you”(Rom. 16:16)
3. CHRIST IS IT’S ONLY HEAD. “And He put all things under His feet and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him ....” (Eph.1:22-23)
3. IT IS NOT ONE OF MANY DENOMINATIONS. We do not read of denominations in the New Testament. There is “one body” of believers. “One Spirit...one Lord, one faith....”(Eph. 4:4-6)
4. IT’S PLAN OF SALVATION IS THE SAME PREACHED BY CHRIST. Jesus and the first century church taught one must hear the word of God (Matt. 7:24; Rom. 10:17); one must believe His words (Jn. 12:44-45; Mk.16:16); one must repent of his own sin (Matt. 4:17; Acts 17:30); one must confess the Christ before men (Matt. 10:32; Acts 8:37); and one must be baptized “for the remission of sins” (Matt. 28:19; Acts 2:38)
WHERE WOULD JESUS WORSHIP?
If Jesus was to attend church services this Sunday, where would He worship? Would He attend all or would He only attend the one church that He established (Matt.16:18)? The great Pentecost occasion recorded in Acts 2, fulfilled the requirements upon which the Kingdom (church) would come with power (Mk. 9:1). From that time on the New Testament speaks of the church as being in existence (Acts 2:47; 1 Cor. 16:19).
Nowhere in the New Testament is there a record of Roman Catholicism or any of the numerous Protestant denominations. The church has always been made up of individuals, susceptible to human error (1 Cor. 1:10-13). Division comes from humans and their views as they look to men rather than the Bible for authority. What is wrong with selecting a “church” of one’s choice? We have the ability to choose, but our “choosing” can be wrong. In the case of the church, Christ built it, purchased it and is its head. Those who respond to His invitation, on His terms, will be added to His church (His one body of believers) Acts 2:41.
True unity cannot be obtained in denominationalism. It is only when men will lay down their creeds, disciplines, manuals, confessions of faith, catechisms, think-so’s and subjective feelings and each with an unprejudiced and receptive heart turns to the word of God for the basis of their belief. Only then, will we have true unity of the Spirit (Eph. 4:1-6) and be pleasing to God.
Are you worshiping in the Lord’s church or another man’s? God is seeking true worshipers.
I WOULD FINISH THE GAME
A group of men were playing ball, when one had a sobering thought. “What would you do if you knew that this would be your last day on earth?” He asked some of the guys.
Some said they would begin to pray; some would go to those they had wronged; others would go pay their obligations which were past due. One man thought seriously for a moment and then gave his answer. He said, “I think I would just play the rest of the game.”
This is the attitude of a faithful Christian. The Bible instructs us to be ready at all times, since the time of Christ’s second coming is uncertain. Matthew 24:44 tells us to be ready “For the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” There will be no signs given and no time to make last minute preparations (Matt. 24:36-39). Remember the five foolish virgins (Matt. 25:1ff.)?
Do not wait until it is too late to respond to God’s Word and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. Finish the game if you are a faithful Christian, but if you are not a Christian, it is better to forfeit the game than to forfeit your soul in Hell.
Today is the day of salvation. Become a Christian as those in the New Testament did. Hear (Rom. 10:17); Believe (Acts 10:43); Confess Christ (Phil. 2:9-11); and be baptized (1 Pet. 3:21). The church that Jesus established is waiting for you to stop playing games and for you to get serious about your soul. Call us. We’ll be glad to answer your questions.
TEACHING BY EXAMPLE
Two young people were involved in an automobile accident. The young girl, a high school student, was badly injured and her friend was killed. The parents were informed later at the hospital that alcohol had been a factor and that both were heavily intoxicated at the time of the crash. The girl’s father went into a rage and said, “Just wait till I get my hands on the person who sold them that liquor; I’ll kill him!” That night when the father returned home, he went into his liquor cabinet to get a drink to “calm his nerves”. It was then that he realized several of his bottles were missing.
Jesus understood the power of a good example. He taught his disciples "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:14-16).
As long as Jesus was in the world, He was the light of the world (Jn. 9:5; cf. 1:4-14). But, in His returning to heaven and in the absence of His physical presence, God has chosen to shed His light upon the lost by the testimony of His written word. The gospel is to be proclaimed to the world through the words and deeds of faithful Christians. A Christian’s lifestyle ought to display the Christian example. The teaching we do is very important, but we must remember that it must also be backed by a good example. Call us to find out what it means to follow Jesus. We’ll be glad to answer your questions.
KEEP YOUR $10,000,000
Suppose a neighbor was to receive a gift of ten million dollars. Lets also suppose your neighbor informed the company that he did not want the gift right now. Rather, he would like it when it was more convenient. What would you think of this person? What could he possibly be thinking about to turn down this gift?
I would ask you the same question in reference to becoming a Christian. What could you be possibly be thinking about that you would turn down the gift of salvation? This is the most valuable gift in the world and it is yours to take freely.
Rom. 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. How much is your soul worth? Your soul to God was worth the price that He paid to redeem you from your sins. The gift of your salvation is free, but it is not cheap. It cost the Son of God, Jesus Christ, His life. It is God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense (Grace). Where is this gift of eternal life found? In Christ. Rom. 6:11, “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord”. “In Christ” used here speaks of the Christian’s union with Christ through baptism.
While salvation is unearned, it is given by God only to those who are “in Christ”. Remember what you thought about the person who refused to take the ten million? What does that make you if you refused the most valuable gift in the world?
Today, take possession of the free gift of eternal life through obedience to the gospel. Do you believe God’s word (Rom. 10 :17)? Are you ready to turn from a life of sin (Lk. 13:3)? Do you believe and will you confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Rom. 10:9-10)? Accept the gift of eternal life by being baptized into Christ for the remission (forgiveness) of your sins (Acts 22:16).
FAITH FEELING
What do you base your faith upon? Is it possible to be satisfied and feel right religiously and still be lost? Faith feeling is not an assurance of salvation! Solomon said, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but it’s end is the way of death” (Prov. 14:12). Salvation is more than what “seems right”. Our faith must be based upon the Word of God and not the words of a man (Rom. 10:17).
What should a member of a denomination do when he learns of false teaching or unauthorized practices according to the New Testament? He should attempt to help the people he worships with to see their error so that they may worship in both spirit and truth (Jn. 4:24).
If they will not hear, then he should diligently search for a group who are dedicated to teach and practice all the truth of the Bible. Jesus warned that if we worship according to the doctrines of men, our worship is vain (Matt. 15:9). It is empty and is therefore unacceptable to God. I challenge you to base your faith on the truth of God’s word rather than the “think-so’s” of men. Christ has one bride, one church and is made up of those who worship according to the one faith (Eph. 4:4-6). The Lord’s church is not made up of denominations, but is the undenominational body of believers who have been added to His church (Acts 2:47). In fact, the Lord is anti-denominational (1 Cor. 1:10). Is your faith founded in fact or felt in the fiction of men’s fairly tales?
“UNITY IN DIVERSITY” IS NOT UNITY
The religious world is not concerned where you worship, so long as you worship Christ. The denominations will even worship with one another (interdenominationalism). In order to do this one must compromise or disregard one’s own beliefs for what is called “unity”. Are denominational churches designed to please man or God? (Gal.1:10). By what authority does one have to attend any church that one pleases? Our Lord only died for and built one church (Acts 20:28; Matt. 16:18). Some may reply, “We are all part of Christ’s church, we just don’t believe and practice the same thing.” Is this possible? Not according to God’s word.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all, and in you all” (Eph 4:4-6). To say we agree on most things still does not make us one. (1 Cor. 1:10).
Fellowship in Christ can only be based upon the one doctrine. I challenge you to study that which is taught and compare the commandments of men with the Word of God (1 Jn. 4:1).
“ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED” WON’T SAVE
2 Peter 2:20 says, “For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.”
Peter points out the possibility of returning to the pollutions of the world. Notice that the entanglement comes after the escape. This defeats the “Once saved, always saved” doctrine held by many. See also 1 Cor. 10:12; Gal. 5:4; Acts 8:9f.; 2 Pet. 3:17.
The scriptures teach that a person who was once saved can become “again entangled” in sin and be lost. They had “forsaken the right way” (vs. 15). Vs. 21 tells us they turned “from the holy commandment”.
Note the following: 1. They had known the way of righteousness (they had escaped the pollutions of the world and they had become Christians). 2. They had turned from the knowledge of the Lord. 3. The result was they were in worse shape than before they were Christians. Were they saved before becoming a Christian? “Once saved, always saved” is a false teaching and those who believe such have placed their souls in jeopardy. Either obey God and live or follow man and perish. Jesus said, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him- the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day” (Jn. 12:48).

Dear reader,
Have you become a Christian as the Bible teaches, or as man teaches. Have you been added to the Lord’s church or have you joined mans Church? There’s only one that provides the hope of eternal life to come. Is your hope based in a man, or founded on the rock of God’s Word?
I WANT TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN
So, you desire to become a Christian but you are not sure what the Bible teaches. God has given us a pattern to follow (Rom. 6:17). For one to become a Christian he must:
1. HEAR GOD’S WORD: Rom. 10:17, “So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.”
2. BELIEVE GOD’S WORD: Acts 10:43, “To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”
3. REPENT FROM YOUR SINFUL LIFESTYLE: Lk. 13:3, “... but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”
4. CONFESS THE NAME OF JESUS: Rom. 10:9, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
5. BE BAPTIZED FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS: Acts 22:16, “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” When was Paul’s sins washed away? When he was baptized into Christ.
How does God’s word compare to what you have been taught. If you did not follow the pattern, you are not a Christian. There is only one way to come before God and live - His way.
WORSHIP WHICH GOD ACCEPTS
Jesus Christ gave three requirements for the acceptable worship of God: “...Those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Jn. 4:24. There is no other way to worship Him acceptably.
Those who consider themselves Christians must consider the following:
1. WORSHIP GOD - the RIGHT object.
We are to worship no other.(Matt. 4:10; Rom. 1:19-25); Idolatry is an abomination to the living God. (1 Pet. 4:3; Jer. 10:3-11; Acts 17:29-30); Do not worship men, angels or “saints”. (Rev. 22:8-9; Acts 10:25-26; 1 Tim. 2:5).
2. IN SPIRIT- the RIGHT attitude.
Worship is not ritual.(1 Cor. 14:15; Acts 17:22-25); We are to offer the sacrifice of praise from our hearts. (Eph. 6:18; Heb. 13:15). Think deeply the things of God as we worship. (Rev. 4:10-11; 1 Cor. 11:23-29; Col. 3:16-17).
3. IN TRUTH- the RIGHT acts.
We are to do the things Christ commanded to be done. (Jn. 14:15; 17:17; Lk. 6:46); We are not to mix in Old Testament worship. (Heb. 9:15, 10:9-10; Gal. 4:21-31); Do only that which we have authority to do. (Matt. 7:21,15:8-9; Col. 2:22). Do you worship God acceptably?
RELIGIOUS TITLES
The word “reverend” is used in reference to God’s name (Ps. 111:9 KJV). The NKJV uses the words “awesome is His name.” “Reverend is never used as a religious title for any human being in the New Testament. Nowhere can be found where Paul was referred to as Rev. Paul.
Peter was never referred to as “Reverend”, “Father” or “Pope”. Paul called himself a “preacher” and a “teacher” (2 Tim. 1:11), and he commanded Timothy to do the work of an evangelist” (2 Tim. 4:5). This was not a title. It described their work they performed. A New Testament Christian is a priest (1 Pet. 2:9). Christ alone is our High Priest.
From the early falling away of the New Testament church into the Greek and Roman Catholic Churches came the separation of Christians into clergy and laity. The New Testament church did not believe nor practice such. The simplicity of Christ’s Kingdom, the church, must not be corrupted by titles that mistakenly repeat the same error of the Jews during the time of Christ (Matt. 23:6-10). The truly great wear only one title: servant, because their first desire in life is that of stooping down in order to lift everyone up to God (Matt. 23:11; 1 Cor. 9:19f). We plead with you to join with us in a return to simple New Testament Christianity.
PRAYING FOR SALVATION
One of the greatest denominational errors is the idea of praying for salvation. It is commonly called “The Sinners Prayer”. It may come as a surprise to you, but the Bible teaches no such doctrine. No where in the New Testament is a sinner asked, told or commanded to pray a prayer inviting God or Jesus in their heart. By a sinner we mean someone who is not born again (Jn. 3:5).
There is not a single instance of a person being told to pray for conversion. Those who had been converted and afterwards sinned were told to pray for forgiveness (1 Jn. 1:9); but alien sinners - those who had never become Christians - were not.
A pattern is found in every example of conversion from the day of Pentecost till the end of the New Testament. Penitent believers were told to be baptized. Acts 2:38 gives the reason why - “For the forgiveness of sins”. Neither Jesus nor the apostles preached prayer as part of the new birth. The Scriptures tell us nothing of so-called “mourner’s bench” or “altar of prayer” as part of conversion. The apostles never told those who sought salvation to keep praying until they “felt” they were pardoned. There is also absolutely no authority in God’s word for the practice of a sinner praying to invite Jesus into one’s heart as an act of conversion. Prayer is a privilege Christians have. Non-Christians must first obey the gospel and become God’s children before they can enjoy the right to say, “Our Father in heaven”.
CALLING EVIL GOOD
Long ago, a prophet of God wrote, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil”
(Is. 5:20). It saddens me to see that we are a part of a generation doing exactly that:
The drunkard is no longer a sinner, he has “a disease”. Couples who live together outside the bonds of marriage are not fornicators, they have a “meaningful relationship”. The person who walks around in public half-naked is not immodest, just “in style”. Whether we think so or not, God says those who do such will not inherit the kingdom of God (Gal. 5:19-21).
Some protest the wearing of animal skins which God created and used to cover man’s body (Gen. 3:21). Some cry out for pro-choice, which means to kill the unborn, the unwanted life within the womb that has no choice. God calls it murder (Ex. 21:23). Some want to legalize gambling to help educate our children. God calls it sin (Ex. 20:15; 17; Matt. 7:12). Some want human rights for murderers who selfishly take away another’s right to live. God demands punishment (Rom. 13:1-7). Some want to handcuff the police and release the criminal. God calls it hypocrisy (Is. 5:18-20). Some want to take discipline away from the teachers and put it in the hands of the students. God calls it foolishness (Prov. 22:15). Some want a paycheck without the work. God calls it laziness (Prov. 6:9f.). Some want Christ, but do not want to obey. God declares it to be vain (empty) worship (Matt. 15:8-9). Consider carefully your ways and obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Turn from your sinful ways and turn to God. Find out how - call or write now.
ONCE AND FOR ALL
Jesus promised to build one church (Matt. 16:18). It came into being in Acts 2. The church was not one that men joined, but men were added to the body of believers at the time of their salvation by the Lord (Acts 2:47). The Lord purchased the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28). He is the head (Eph. 1:22). The church was to possess a visible unity, one that the world could see (Jn. 17:20-21). Anything more than the one church Jesus established, is too much!
Have you ever seen denominational names, creeds or practices in the Bible? Denominations are not in Christ’s church. To say “One church is as good as another” may reflect current broad-minded religious thinking, but this shows a lack of Bible knowledge and rebellion against God. To condone that which the Bible condemns is to make yourself an enemy of God.
Throughout the world, people are studying their New Testaments and discovering that what made people “Christians only” in the 1st century, will, when obeyed, make “Christians only” in the
21st century. This message is presented by a congregation of people who strive to believe and do what was believed and done in the New Testament. What they were, we are dedicated to be - Christians. If you believe we are to be Christians only and to have Bible authority for all we say, think and do religiously, give us a call and let the Scriptures bring you into His church once and for all.
FORNICATION IS STILL A SIN
Sexual ethics today stress individual freedom. This kind of freedom is more of a slavery to selfishness and loneliness than a way to true happiness and fulfillment. Our society is one of personal loneliness, of individual isolation even in the midst of a crowd. Many are trying to fulfill their needs for warm, caring relationships through sex outside of marriage.
Fornication is about as common today as drinking water. It is no longer husband and wife, but you and your “significant other”. This living arrangement is very popular. America is changing how and with who they sleep with at night.
The results of such a lifestyle is not positive. Sexually transmitted diseases are at epidemic proportions. Nationwide, more than one million babies are killed by means of abortion each year. The rate of illegitimacy is staggering.
Man may have changed his mind about a lot of things in recent years and have legalized the morally wrong, but God’s Word does not change. Fornication is still sin and the consequences of such is still death. Regardless of what you want to call it: “shacking up”, “a meaningful relationship”, “sleeping together” or “making love” - if you go to bed with someone to whom you are not married, it is still sin and you stand condemned before God. The Bible says fornicators are among those who will not go to heaven (1 Cor. 6:9). Please think before you sleep.
THE WORD, THE WAY AND THE WILL OF THE LORD
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (Jn. 1:14). Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jn. 14:6).
It is said by some that “The way of salvation is Christ and not baptism, good works or church membership”. But we ask, “Can the person of Christ be separated from the commands of Christ?” Baptism is a command of Christ’s (Mk. 16:15-16); good works are commanded (Eph. 2:8-10); church membership is equivalent to being saved (Acts 2:47).
Is a person really “believing in Christ” as “the way” if he denies the commands of “the way”?
No man in history has ever lived a life pleasing to God while turning a deaf ear to what the Lord has said he must do. All the explaining away of the Lord’s words cannot erase the fact that 1). Jesus is the way and 2). the Lord’s way is expressed in His will that is outlined in His word (Matt. 7:21; Jn. 14:15). We plead with you to acknowledge the Lord as “the way” by doing His will. Obey the gospel of salvation according to the New Testament pattern.
THE THREE R’s OF TRUE RELIGION
True salvation is made up of REPENTANCE, REMISSION and REJOICING. Most in the religious world understand the need to repent in order to become a Christian (Acts 17:30-31). True repentance occurs when one turns away from sinful living and turns to righteous living. The Bible is the final authority to determine that which is sinful and that which is righteous.
True remission (forgiveness) of sins by God can only be accomplished through baptism into Christ. No other purpose for baptism in the New Testament is given (Acts 2:38; Gal. 3:27). Water, itself, can save no one, but the principle of obedience (your will submitting to God’s will) causes one to come into contact with the blood of Christ through water removing all past sins (Rom. 6:1-4; 1 Pet. 3:21).
True rejoicing is the logical result following true repentance and remission (Acts 8:26-39; 16:25-34). The Bible speaks clearly about the sinner’s need to repent (asking God to forgive you) and to be baptized (receiving God’s forgiveness).
Will you respond to God’s invitation to repent, receive remission and be blessed in true rejoicing? For further information on how to be saved according to the Bible, please call or write to the address below.
GODS WORD IS THE LAST WORD
The Word of God, unaided by human manuals, disciplines or creeds, is all-sufficient rule of THE FAITH and the practical guide to daily Christian living (2 Tim. 3:15-17). Consequently, God’s Word is the last and final word on all matters that pertain to a person’s eternal salvation.
God’s Word is the last word on the church. Jesus built one church (Matt. 16:18; 1 Cor. 12:20). The church is essential because only the saved are added to it (Acts 2:47). If you are not in His church, you are not saved. This is an either or principle.
God’s Word is the last word on redemption from one’s own sin. The Scriptures teach that faith, repentance and baptism are essential to obtaining God’s forgiveness of sins (Mk. 16:15; Acts 2:38).
God’s Word is the last word on right living. Many things are politically correct, legally justified but is still morally wrong. The Bible teaches we are to live “soberly, righteously and godly in the present world” (Tit. 2:12).
Reader, to who’s word do you listen to and obey - man’s or God’s? Will you respond to God’s Word and receive the reward His Word alone promises?
WORSHIP TO GOD WITH AN INSTRUMENT - #2
Do mechanical instruments serve as an aid to singing just as song books help us to sing the words? Is the musical instrument an aid to help us to sing, just as eye glasses aid a person to see? When a child of God sings a scriptural song from a songbook, he is singing. He is not offering two different kinds of music. When a person sees through glasses, he is seeing. He is not seeing and hearing through the glasses.
But when a person sings and plays an instrument, he is doing several things. He is no longer singing only. The use of a mechanical instrument to worship God would be an addition to what God has authorized under the New Covenant (Rev. 22:18; cf. Prov. 30:6; Deut. 4:2, 12:32).
The New Testament only authorizes singing “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). Worship to God that goes beyond that which He has given Christians the authority to do is sin and is a willful act of rebellion against God. It will lead to death (Rom. 6:23).
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17). By who’s authority do you trust in and obey - man’s or God’s?
Will you respond to God’s Word and worship Him in spirit and truth (Jn. 4:24)?
THINK AGAIN!
It is widely believed and preached that a person needs only to “believe” in order to be saved. I challenge you to find this taught in the Bible. The expression, “just accept Jesus in your heart” leaves us with the false impression that there is nothing for sinners to do to be saved. THINK AGAIN. The Bible teaches that there is something you must do to be saved (Acts 9:6; 22:16).
Listen to what the Lord Jesus Christ said concerning salvation:
1. “If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (Jn. 8:24).
2. “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” (Lk. 13:3).
3. “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (Jn. 3:5).
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17). There are commands to be obeyed to become a Christian. By who’s authority do you trust and “believe only” - man’s or God’s? Think again.
WHAT WERE YOU TAUGHT?
Jesus said in Mk. 16:16, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” This passage implies the following: 1. Man is lost. 2. God has a plan to save him. 3. Man must obey this plan in order to be saved.
Which of the following statements did the Lord make in Mk. 16:16?
1. “He that is baptized as an infant and later believes as an adult will be saved.”
2. “He that believes is saved and then because he is saved, should be baptized.”
3. “He that believes and is not baptized will be saved.”
4. “He that believes and is baptized will be saved.”
Some will argue, “Jesus did not say ‘He that is not baptized shall be condemned,’ just those who do not believe.” Those who do not believe are not subject to baptism. Consider the following: “He that eats and digested his food will live; but he who does not eat will die.” A person who does not eat cannot digest food. The eating of food cannot save unless it is digested. Likewise, one who believes but is not baptized for the remission of sins is unforgiven by God and will die. Let us remember, it was the Lord who joined belief and baptism together in Mk. 16:16. That which the Lord joins together, let not man separate.
GOD’S SYSTEM FOR UNITY
If men today would come to grips with BIBLICAL AUTHORITY (how God authorizes) and abide
by the same, then the Lord’s prayer will be fulfilled (Jn. 17); Paul’s plea will be realized (1 Cor. 1:10ff.); and we will once again go back to God’s system for unity as revealed in Eph. 4:1-6.
Brethren can be of the same love, of one accord and one mind (Phil.2:2). Brethren can “stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for THE FAITH OF THE GOSPEL” (Phil. 1:27). Brethren can speak the same thing, be of the same mind, in the same judgment and have no divisions (1 Cor. 1:10). Brethren can become complete ... live in peace (2 Cor. 13:11).
BUT, the Bible never speaks about “unity in diversity” as we are hearing it today. Real unity will never be until we have a UNITY OF THE FAITH! Until we walk, talk, love, act, believe, obey, do and follow THE NEW TESTAMENT PATTERN, we will never have BIBLE UNITY among “Christians”. Our God is perfect and His system for unity is perfect. It does not fail. It is men who fail the system. It fails because men fail to work within the perfect pattern given by God. Who’s system are you under - God’s or man’s? True unity requires obedience to God’s word.
GOD AND THE HOMOSEXUAL
Recently, we’ve heard and read statements from both points of view concerning homosexuality. Many of the remarks begin with, “I think”, “I feel”, or “I believe...” The problem is that it makes no difference what you or I think. What matters is what God has said.
The issue is not whether God loves the homosexual or whether Jesus died to save them. The basic debate is whether God endorses such a lifestyle or does God require repentance and self-restraint. Key New Testament passages in regard to this topic are: Rom. 1:24-29; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; 1 Tim. 1:8-10; 2 Pet. 2:4-10 and Jude 7. Calm and objective reflection upon these Scriptures show that God views homosexuality as a violation of His holy and divine will.
From the beginning God made Adam and Eve. He made woman to be man’s companion. In marriage, the two become one and are to multiply (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:24: Matt. 19:4-6). This God designed plan is contrary to homosexuality and demands heterosexuality. Man does not have the authority to change what God has ordained. Are we to care about them? Yes! God made mankind in His image. Every soul is priceless. God is no respecter of persons in terms of salvation. All are free to accept the gift of eternal life through His Son.
Are we to accept their immoral lifestyle? No! Christians cannot accept that which God condemns. God is a respecter of lifestyles. The Bible teaches we are to hate sin (ours and theirs), but love the sinner. Jesus died for all sinners, but not all sinners choose to be saved. Man must turn away (repent) from words and actions contrary to God’s Word and obey the Gospel which is God’s power to save (Lk. 13:3; Rom. 1:16; Acts 2:38).
REPENTANCE IS NOT FORGIVENESS
Many today are under the assumption that a person receives forgiveness at the time they repent. Repentance is a turning away from sin, disobedience or rebellion and is a turning back to the standard - God and His word. Sin is going beyond what God has given us authority to do. We either fail to do what He says or we do things God has not given us permission to do. Repentance is a willful act of man. It involves stopping one act and beginning another.
However, repentance alone does not grant forgiveness by God to the non-Christian. The Bible clearly shows that one who is not a Christian must believe the word of God (Heb. 11:6); repent from his past/present sins (Lk. 13:3); confess Christ (Rom. 10:9-10) and be baptized. Why baptism? Because, it is at that point your sins are forgiven by God, not before and not at the moment of faith nor when you repented or confessed. Baptism for the forgiveness of sins is the final step that puts you into a right relationship with God (Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16; 1 Pet. 3:21).
Only after one has become a Christian does 1 John 1:5-9 apply. A person who has already obeyed the Gospel is not in need of re-baptism for his forgiveness from God. The Christian only must confess his sins and God is just to forgive and cleanse him from all unrighteousness.
HBO
These three letters bring to mind something very different from what this article is about. No, it is not an advertisement for a movie channel. The same three letters can be used to show God’s true and simple plan to save you.
H - means to HEAR THE WORD OF GOD. This is the beginning of understanding what God would have us do to be saved from sin and have the hope of a home in heaven.
(Rom. 10:17).
B - means to BELIEVE THE WORD OF THE LORD. This is essential if our intention is to be pleasing to our God and Creator. (Heb. 11:6).
O - means to OBEY THE WORD OF THE LORD. Faith is more than just a belief about the man Jesus Christ. If you believe in Jesus Christ you will obey His commands as well. There is no substitute for obedience unto salvation. (1 Sam. 15:22; Jn. 14:15).
During the time of the New Testament, sinners heard, believed and obeyed the Gospel. This was pleasing to God then and it still pleases God today (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 22:16).
ARE YOU IN THE BOOK?
Sometimes we may tell someone, “Look me up, I’m in the book!” The meaning is, you can find my number in the telephone directory. In a similar way, we can ask a question concerning the Lamb’s Book of Life (Rev. 21:27). Will your name be found in that all important book?
The Bible teaches that it is possible for our names to blotted out of the Book of Life (Ex. 32:32-33). These very words argue against the teaching that when one becomes saved, he cannot again loose his soul through sin. The idea that “Once Saved - Always Saved” is a false teaching and leads many to believe that they are accepted by God no matter what. This is deadly to those who act on such a belief.
Since only those who die in a saved condition have their names written in the Lamb’s Book, it becomes vital for you to understand how you are to live your life to ensure this hope. For your name to be found there, you must be “in Christ” (2 Tim. 2:10). You must obey the Lord’s commandments to be saved (Heb. 5:8-9; Gal. 3:26-27). Afterwards, you can rejoice (Acts 8:39).
ARE YOU IN THE BOOK?
TRUE HAPPINESS
Where do you think happiness can be found? King Solomon sought happiness for his heart through every desire he could imagine. He tried to laugh his troubles away. He built things, married many women, drank wine and lived in folly (Eccl. 2:1-9). Whatever Solomon desired, he did not deny himself, but all these only added to his unhappiness. Solomon realized it is all vanity and grasping for the wind. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all” (Eccl. 12:13).
Contentment of the heart can be found today, but it is only to be found in one Person - the Lord Jesus Christ. He said to His own, “I will see you again and your heart will rejoice and your joy no one will take away from you” (Jn. 16:22).
Are you truly happy on this day? Are you in Christ. Read this simple Bible passage - Galatians 3:27, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ”. Have you done this?
THIEF OR SAINT?
A thief broke into a house and seeing a picture of Jesus Christ hanging on the wall, he turned the picture around before stealing anything. He did not want the Lord to see what he was doing.
Unfortunately for him, his fingerprints were discovered on the picture and he was caught.
And so it shall be with us. Each soul shall someday be convicted or redeemed by Christ. My friends, which of these will Christ be for you? Who will or can you blame if you are lost forever?
Eternity is timeless. A place that is never ending. If you are lost, you will have only yourself to blame for not surrendering your life to God!
Jesus made the supreme sacrifice by dying on a cross for your sins. He has become the head of His church, His spiritual body to which all the saved are added (Acts 2:47). There are none that will be saved outside of His church and there will be none that are lost in His church.
God has made all the necessary provisions for us to be in His church. The plan for eternal life is recorded in the Bible, but you must respond to His invitation to “Come” (Rev. 22:17). Jesus said, “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (Jn. 15:14). Turn to Christ, obey and live or turn Christ away, disobey and die without hope of life eternal.
At the day of Judgment, will Christ convict or redeem you?
WHAT IS YOUR SOUL?
What is your soul? It is simply, the eternal part of man. The soul cannot be seen under a microscope nor can it be detected by an x-ray, but the soul of man is alive. Your soul is a gift given to you by God. You can abuse it or you can care for it. The choice is yours.
Your body is constantly aging and like it or not, one day it will die. But what will happen to your soul? The Bible teaches, your body will return to the earth as it was; and your spirit shall return to God who gave it (Eccl. 12:7). Then what?
Although, the physical body may cease to live, the soul of man will continue on in eternity. The question is, “But where?” This is the question only you have the power to answer. Given the option of either heaven or hell, which would you choose? The Bible says that you must give an account of yourself to God (Rom. 14:12). What will you say about the way you spent your life?
Becoming a Christian is a personal decision that no one can make for you. Not your mom, your dad, your friends, not even your preacher. You must decide where, how and who you will trust in today, tomorrow and in eternity to come. Where will your soul be throughout all eternity?
THE MATH OF GOD
The word of God plus the false teachings of denominational doctrines equals condemnation (Rev. 22:18; Deut. 4:2; Matt. 15:9; 1 Cor. 4:6). Hearing God’s word plus belief plus repentance plus confession of Christ plus baptism for the forgiveness of sins plus living a faithful life before God equals salvation (Rom.10:17; Jn. 3:16; Lk. 13:3; Rom. 10:10; Acts 22:16; Rev. 2:10).
Faith plus virtue plus knowledge plus temperance plus patience plus godliness plus brotherly kindness plus love equals fruitfulness in Christ (2 Pet. 1:5-9).
The Bible minus any part equals condemnation (Rev. 22:19). The body minus the hand which causes an offense equals no offense (Matt. 18:8-9). The church minus the disorderly brethren equals purity (2 Thess. 3:6; Matt. 18:17). Disciples times disciples equals growth (Acts 6:1).
The Bible divided by careful study equals proper understanding (2 Tim. 2:15). A house divided against itself equals a collapse (Matt. 12:25). A religious world divided by men equals division, strife, confusion and denominationalism (1 Cor. 1:10-13). How’s your math?
THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH VS. DENOMINATIONALISM (Part 1)
Our currency system is divided into various denominations: one, five, ten dollar bills, etc. Our political system is also denominated. We can see that “denomination” signifies a division, a segment; thus in the religious sense, a sect or a party. A denomination is larger than any local church, but smaller than those who are saved as a whole.
Yet, the New Testament speaks only of local congregations (1 Cor. 1:2) or the church universal referring to all of the saved (Eph. 1:22-23). Since this is true, the New Testament church we read of in the Bible cannot be fitted into any denominational mold. It is not scriptural and not from God.
The church the Lord purchased with His blood is not and cannot be a denomination.
The articles that will follow are not intended to offend, but educate (Eph. 4:14-15). I invite your comments and your arguments against such. If you are religious and serious about your salvation and your desire is to know the truth (Jn. 8:32), then I hope you will consider and study for yourself the statements that will follow concerning this topic. May God’s word bless and bring you to Him.
THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH VS. DENOMINATIONALISM (Part 2)
The church of Christ, the one church Jesus purchased with His blood (1 Pet. 1:18-19) is not a Jewish synagogue. The Old Testament, the foundation of Judaism, has been done away (Rom. 7:1-4; Col. 2:14,17; Heb. 8:8-13). Second, the church of Christ is not a Protestant denomination. All the denominations of our day were established by men, hundreds of years after the church of our Lord and Savior was established on Pentecost, A.D. 30 (Acts 2:1-4, 47; cf. Mk. 9:1; Acts 1:8).
Denominations practice things that are absent in the first century church: prayer altars, voting on baptismal candidates, mechanical instruments in worship, faith only, etc.
Third, the church of Christ is not the Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic church did not come into existence in a full grown state until A.D. 606, 576 years after the Lord’s church was established. The apostolic church had no distinction of priests for all Christians were priests (1 Pet. 2:9). It had no Acolytes, Cardinals, Popes, Nuncios, beads, images, relics, sprinkling for baptism, sacraments, rosary, shrines, crusades, penance, praying to Mary, Lent, ashes, Mass, praying to “saints”, purgatory, Christmas, holy water, instrumental music, monasteries, celibacy, etc. The Protestant church nor the Roman Catholic Church is not kin to the apostolic church.
May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith and salvation (Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).
THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH VS. DENOMINATIONALISM (Part 3)
The church defined: the word “church” is not a building but a people. The Greek word is ecclesia and means “the called out”. So the church is the one body of people who have been called out of the world by the gospel (2 Thess. 2:14) through obedience (2 Thess. 1:8). Jesus Christ rules over the church as its only head (Eph. 1:22-23).
The church is singular in number. There is one fold (Jn. 10:16). The church is that one fold (Acts 20:28). There is one body (Eph. 4:4) and that body is the church (Eph. 1:22-23). The Lord instituted and taught monogamy of marriage (Rom. 7:1-4). The church is His bride (Eph. 5:22-33).
The church of Christ in the 21st century is that one, true New Testament church which existed in the first century. We must have an unreserved commitment to the Bible as the standard in religion. Unity can only exist when the Bible is allowed to settle the matters of faith and truth.
May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith and salvation (Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).
THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH VS. DENOMINATIONALISM (Part 4)
Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was undenominational. His church can only be undenominational. Jesus did not align himself with any Jewish party or division while on earth. The Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians and the Essenes each advocated some truth, but Jesus aligned himself with none of them. Think about it.
Our Lord prayed for unity, the opposite of denominationalism (Jn. 17:20-21); He paid for unity, the opposite of denominationalism (Eph. 2:16); He pleaded for unity, the opposite of denominationalism (1 Cor. 1:10); He planned for unity, the opposite of denominationalism (Eph. 4:1-6). Therefore, Our Lord was undenominational. In fact, He was anti-denominational. If Christ is opposed to denominationalism, so to must His church be.
The plea of the Lord’s church is simple: Pure, New Testament, undenominational Christianity. It is encouraging that many are beginning to see and desire the pure gospel of Jesus Christ.
May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith and salvation (Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).
WHY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS NOT A DENOMINATION
Denominationalism is:
1. Opposed to the Lord’s prayer for unity and is the fruit of faithlessness. Jn. 17:20-21
2. Man-made while the Lord’s church is divine in origin. Dan. 2:44; Matt. 16:18
3. Named after men, forms of government, virtues, days, “ordinances” etc. 1 Pet. 4:11
4. 7th century (Catholic),16th century (Protestant) in origin. The Lord’s church is 1st century.
5. Contrary to one of the purposes of Calvary’s cross. Eph. 2:15-16
6. A vain attempt to serve and worship God. Ps. 127:1; Matt. 15:9
7. A divisive means of dividing homes when God wants homes united in truth. Josh. 24:15
8. Contrary to the apostles’ doctrine. Rom. 16:17-18
9. Unable to justify, sanctify or save a single soul because it is not the gospel. Gal. 1:6-8
10. One of the six sins that God hates. Prov. 6:16-19
11. To conclude that God is a liar and the author of confusion. Heb. 6:18: 1 Cor. 14:33
12. To infer that we cannot know the truth that sets us free from sin and death. Jn. 8:32
13. Not apostolic. The apostles were members of the church of Christ. Acts 2:41
14. Destined for destruction. Matt. 15:13; Mk. 3:24-25
Please consider what you believe in light of these Scriptures. This article was written in love, not hate, for your soul. If heaven is your desire, turn to God’s word and have a change of heart.
May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith and salvation (Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).
WHY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS NOT METHODIST (1)
This article is about doctrine, not personalities. No intention is made to question the sincerity of faith of those who believe such teaching. According to the Discipline of the Methodist Church:
1. “Let every adult person and the parents of every child to be baptized, have the choice of sprinkling, pouring or immersion” p.545.
A. Refutation. The Word of God defines baptism as immersion only and is seen as a “burial” in and a “raising up” from water. (Acts 8:39; Rom. 6:3; Col.2:12).
2. “The Order for the Baptism of Infants” is justified on the basis Jesus said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me” (Matt. 19:14). Article 1910
A. Refutation. Baptism is not the subject Jesus was teaching on this occasion. Baptism is not even mentioned in chapters 18,19 and 20 of Matthew.
3. Parents of the infant are duty bound to teach the “baptized” infant, concerning our faith.
Article 1910
A. Refutation. Teaching of the person to be baptized preceded true baptism (Matt. 28:18-20), as well as followed it. Infants are incapable of instruction, therefore are not candidates for such.
Please consider what you believe in light of these Scriptures. If heaven is your desire, turn to God’s word and have a change of heart. May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith and salvation (Jn. 4:24; Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17).
WHY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS NOT METHODIST (2)
This article concerns doctrine, not personalities. No intention is made to question sincerity. According to their book, Discipline of the Methodist Church:
1. Article 362 gives numerous rules, teachings and regulations governing the procedures and practices of the Methodist Church and all ministers are obligated to observe “every part”.
A. Contradiction. The inspired Scriptures make up God’s only authorized guide (2 Tim. 3:16-17). “All things that pertain to life and godliness” were given in the first century (2 Pet. 1:3). No other doctrine, precept, commandment or policy is to be taught other than that which was given to the apostles (Gal. 1:8-9). The teaching as doctrine the commandments of men void the Word of God and a person who teaches such has fallen from grace (Matt. 15:9; Gal. 5:4).
2. Article 4 states all its complex conferences, powers and duties are given within the Discipline.
A. Contradiction. The church of Christ in the first century had no church governing conferences. Each local congregation was independent of all others. Each were under Christ alone as head with all authority (Col. 1:18; Eph. 1:22-23).
The “Historical Statement” declares, “The Methodist Church is a church of Christ in which ‘the pure Word of God is preached and the Sacraments duly administered.’” Judging by what has already been shown to be opposed to the Scriptures, this very statement itself is in error.
Please consider what you believe in light of these Scriptures. If heaven is your desire, turn to God’s word and have a change of heart. May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith and salvation (Jn. 4:24; Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). Your response is welcomed.
WHY THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IS NOT METHODIST (3)
This article concerns doctrine, not personalities. No intention is made to question sincerity. According to the Methoist’s book, Discipline of the Methodist Church:
1. Discipline, Article 305 states no member is authorized to preach without a license.
A. Contradiction. In the New Testament, every Christian preached. There is no example in the Bible requiring one to obtain a license to preach (Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 8:4).
2. Discipline, Article 313 states women may engage in the ministry of preaching except as traveling evangelist.
A. Contradiction. A women is not to preach in a public setting in a mixed company of Christians. (1 Cor. 14:34; 1 Tim. 2:11-12; Acts 18:25-26)
3. Discipline, Article 414 states the term “Reverend” is applied to Methodist men.
A. Contradiction. “Reverend” is used once in the KJV Bible and there it is applied to God. The NKJV translates the same word as “awesome” (Ps. 111:9).
The Methodist Church originated within the Church of England in 1729. The church Of Christ has its origin in the New Testament church of the Bible. The Methodist Discipline is nothing more than a creed. Creeds do not unite, they divide and add to God’s Word (1 Cor. 1:10; Matt. 15:8-9).
Please consider your salvation in light of the Scriptures. If heaven is your desire, turn to God’s word and have a change of heart. May God’s word alone be the reason for your faith.
(Jn. 4:24; Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). Your response is welcomed.
